Welcome to Hemingford Grey
East Hemingeford, Emingeforde (11th century); Hamicheford (12th century); Hemmingeforde Turbervill, Turbelville, Trubbevill, or Trubelvill, Hemmingeforde Parva (13th - 14th century); Hemygforde Grey, Hemingford Priors (14th - 15th century) and Hemingford Grey (Modern). The village of Hemingford Grey was known as East Hemingeford or Emingeforde in the 11th Century and then over the subsequent years as Hemmingeforde Turbervill or just plain Turbelville, Trubbevill or even Trubelvill but then it reverts to Hemmingeforde Parva and by the 15th Century either Hemygforde Grey or Hemingford Priors. Why all the changes? They are simply trying to establish and explain who controlled the Manor of what is now Hemingford Grey but we will explain all that in detail in the History of the parish. Hemingford Grey is situated on the southern banks of the River Great Ouse, opposite and slightly upstream from the town of St Ives on the opposite northern bank. Although the village has lost its railway line and the commercial traffic that once navigated the river, the village today has close connections to the A14 dual-carriageway and thence onwards heading south to Cambridge or north to Peterborough. Hemingford Grey is one of the parishes of the District of Huntingdonshire, whose administrative centre is Huntingdon, the other principle towns being St Ives home of the Chapel on the Bridge, St Neots the largest town in the County of Cambridgeshire, the Roman town of Godmanchester and Ramsey site of the former Abbey.
